Still Christian after All These Years Barbara Allen 9781934216507 Books Reviews
Though it is obvious that Allen was, to paraphrase the words of Barbara Brown Taylor in her book "Leaving Church," cut deeply by the swordplay of the Christian cross, grace lies in the title. How many others, suffering post-traumatic stress from years of childhood bondage to fundamentalist ideas, take the risk to examine a God who sought to redeem us through love rather than fear?
A bookstore owner loaned me this little tome. Upon reading this short book, I have finally realized that my parents generation (Baby Boomers) are only concerned about their existential experiences. Everything is about them, and if life just happened to be hard, then they sail out (journeying) to find themselves. Upon their journeys, they have introduced my generation to divorce, abortion, material consumption, and liberal spirituality. Ms. Allen assumes that she is the only person who grows up in a dysfunctional household. Excuse me! We all do. I grew up in Greenville, SC too. Even applied for Bob Jones but was rejected due to the fact I played guitar in a Rock'n Roll band. This does not change my mind about orthodoxy. Ms. Allen's journey is no different than most people. We're all broken, we all have over bearing fundamentalist relatives; but does this mean we introduce society with ancient heresies? No. Ms. Allen is a terse writer, but, the content is what I expect from my parents generation light and fluffy with no real meat.
After seeing this book advertised in a magazine, I asked for it for Christmas. I received it, read it, and was NOT disappointed! The author paints a frightening (and at times amusing) portrait of growing up in a dysfunctional, fundamentalist Christian family. She even spent a year at Bob Jones University! Fortunately, she slowly but surely came to realize you can be a Christian and not take the Bible literally, that Christianity can be more about what you CAN do instead of a list of "should-nots." Well-written, interesting, sad, but funny at times, too. I recommend it.
I laughed. I cried! It was great!
Lovingly offered insights into the spiritual evolution from self congratulatory "Christian" sanctimonious isolation to
Joyous inclusion.
Any seeker will, I believe, find this book and author a valuable read.
Already recommending it to others.
